Margarita Island has maintained intact many of it´s costums and traditions. The handcraft on Margarita Island, elaborated with inhereted tecniques and using the resources of the land, has the pecularity of beeing a craft executed by specific villages, where each one of them produces its particular artwork.
"Hamacas y Chinchorros".
Hammocks. Due to the fame of beeing texil artwork of excellent quality,
the hammocks from Margarita are very popular nationally and
internationally. The hammocck from La Vecindad are made from
closely-knitted multicolored fabrics (Hammocks) while the ones from
Santa Ana del Norte are made by a net-like loose- knitted weavery
(chinchorros).

"Mapires" In the valley of Pedrogonzales, the Mapires are made. Mapires are basquets made of Palma Real. You will find them in different shapes and sizes and they have many different uses. This artwork can compete by its originality with palm bags from all over the world.
"Maras". Another kind of basquet, made in Sabana de Guacuco from vegetal material, specially the rotos of the Copey tree. They are available in different sizes and shapes and are employed in a variety of uses.
Hats from "Cogollo" (palm sprouts): The hat form Margarita is famous due to its shape. Its confection represents a real artistic work. The weavers from San Juan Bautista are famous for their ability in this craft.
Pottery from "El Cercado" El Cercado is a small village located at 1 km from Santa Ana del Norte. The craftsmen form this place work the clay with their hands to form it into vases, amphores, pots and water storage bowels and a large number of very useful implements. A sign outside the house indicates the name of the artist. |
