The image of the Virgin was broght to Margarita from Cubagua Island after dthe tropical storm in 1541. This was the first church built on Margarita Island. It was a small church initally, that was remodeled several times. Ist was decreed Basilica Menor by Pope John Paul II in 1995.

Observations: Its name honors the patron of this village and patron of the Venezuelan Marine. "Virgen del Valle" Festivities take place each year on September 8. On this date, the Statue is lowerd from its altar and exhibited where the devotes may be close to it. On Dicember 8, the statue is returned to its altar.
General description: It is a small church in neogotic style. The base is in shape of a Latin Cross.
